Moodle Conference

Martin Dougiamas Keynote
April 20th, 2009 by Matt Lingard | Edit | No Comments »

By openness I’m referring to the ability for Moodle to be integrated with other systems such as repositories and eportfolios but also changes that are being made to make it really easy to include other content from the ‘open web’ such as Youtube videos & Flickr photos in your Moodle course.  There’s much more on Martin Dougiamas’s keynote on Nitin Parmar’s blog. Maths, Stats & e-Learning

The last (I think) of my trawl of the HEA Subject centre sites… this is MSOR.  Not a lot on this one.

e-Learning
The terms “Electronic learning” and “e-Learning” are used to describe situations in which the student and teacher are separated by space or time and where this gap is bridged through the use of online technologies. This is a rapidly changing field which the Network tries to keep pace with through the provision of workshops, articles and dedicated publications.
In mathematics we have a number of particular issues which have yet to be satisfactorily addressed.
How do you include mathematical notation online?
How do you share interactive mathematical diagrams and figures?

MSOR Projects

The Network has sponsored a number of projects which develop specific e-learning activities, for example Java Applets for Pure Mathematics. More details of our projects can be found here.

Guide to e-learning resources and tools for social science

The following sections of our website focus on some of the key issues in relation to the use and development of e-learning within the social sciences:

    • C-SAP and e-learning - how the centre helps to support and promote effective e-learning * e-learning Scoping Survey 2008
    • Guides and resources - links to key information and best practice for using e-learning
    • e-learning overview - a short synopsis of current e-learning methods in the social science

More information about the Higher Education Academy’s support for e-learning can be found in their supporting e-learning section. This includes a series of guides, details of national e-learning projects, and documents relating to strategy and implementation, as the Higher Education Academy, with JISC, has a significant role in the implementation of HEFCE’s e-learning strategy.

Using the Virtual Campus for language learning: A case study in pedagogical and practical approach to using ICT
    papers, articles and case studies

This paper considers the ways in which a learning platform can be used for language classes within the higher education context. The platform, the Virtual Campus, incorporates a number of features and facilities including the use of the multimedia platform for final year French materials, and the discussion lists for second-year students of English as a Foreign Language. In an attempt to explore possible ways in which information and communications technology (ICT) could be used in an innovative manner in the final level French classes, a research project was piloted at the University of Lincoln (formerly the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside) in 2000-2001.

    Assessment and independent language learning
